Jon Havelock brings to SRI a wealth of experience at both the municipal and provincial levels of government, and in senior executive roles in the private sector.

Mr. Havelock articled at a major Calgary law firm and then joined the legal department of a multi-national oil company in 1982. While there, he served as both a Trustee of the Calgary Board of Education (two years as Chairman) and an Alderman on City Council. He assumed progressively greater responsibilities in the areas of oil and gas and real estate, culminating in a transfer to corporate headquarters in the US. He was primarily responsible for various corporate properties and assisted in the public financing of the company’s real estate development subsidiary.

In 1988, Mr. Havelock returned to Calgary as the Vice-President and Director of Canadian Operations for a professional basketball league, responsible for all league operations, marketing and legal matters for the Canadian-based teams. He subsequently joined one of Canada’s largest, multi-faceted direct marketing organizations in the capacity of Vice-President, Marketing and Sales.

Jon left the private sector in 1993 when he was elected as an MLA for the riding of Calgary Shaw. He was re-elected in March of 1997 and appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General, leading the development of Alberta’s justice policies. In May of 1999, he was appointed Minister of Economic Development, responsible for the implementation of strategies to increase exports, enhance competitiveness, and attract visitors, investment and business to Alberta. Such duties included various government investment and marketing missions to Asia, Europe and the United States, and as Alberta’s representative on the 2001 Team Canada mission to China. During such time, he also served on various senior cabinet, political and government committees and was both Government and Deputy-Government House Leader. Mr. Havelock left politics in the spring of 2001.

Jon has spoken extensively on public policy matters in Alberta, Asia, Europe and the United States. He holds a B. Comm. (Honours) from the University of Alberta and both a B.A. (Law) and M.A. from Downing College, the University of Cambridge, England.
